What We do

White Collar

White Collar

White collar crimes comprise a major part of John’s practice. These cases, usually charged in federal court, are large, complex, and can involve multiple individual and corporate defendants. They often contain a mountain of documentary evidence – evidence which can make or break a prosecution. John’s adeptness in thoroughly and systematically breaking down the evidence and conducting an informed and painstaking investigation has yielded positive results for his clients – which have included accountants, entrepreneurs, business executives, academics, and physicians and other medical providers. John has extensive experience in representing corporations and individuals who have been subpoenaed by the grand jury or who have been contacted by law enforcement officials.

Federal Crimes

Federal Crimes

As a former Deputy Federal Public Defender, John is well versed in representing individuals who find themselves ensnared in the federal criminal justice system. Cases charged in federal court cases are the most complex and well-resourced matters found anywhere. They are often exhaustively investigated over the course of years by multiple law enforcement agencies, who bring the full weight of the resources of the federal government to bear against individuals accused of violating the law. These cases often involve wiretaps, informants, and electronic surveillance. Simply put, these cases are minefields, and defending against them requires the kind of smart, thoughtful, and vigorous advocacy that John is known for by judges, prosecutors, colleagues in the defense bar – and most importantly, his clients. John’s mastery of the intricacies and difficulties inherent in the federal court system has paid dividends time and time again for his clients, who have realized amazing results.

State Court Offenses

State Court Offenses

Many criminal cases are handled in state, as opposed to federal, court, and John is experienced in representing individuals in this court system as well. His vigorous and thoughtful advocacy there – in cases involving assaults, domestic violence, and sex offenses – resulted in case dismissals, reduced charges, and other favorable dispositions.

Investigation Targets
& Grand Jury Witnesses

The need for sophisticated and strategic legal representation is critical prior to the filing of formal charges. In fact, there is a great deal of investigation, strategizing, and negotiation that can be conducted at the pre-indictment stage to avoid or resolve criminal investigations. John has represented numerous subjects and targets of criminal investigations, as well as those who might be called as witnesses in grand jury proceedings. In addition, given the interplay between criminal and civil proceedings, he has worked with counsel in parallel civil proceedings to minimize or neutralize any spill-over effect in those proceedings – and vice versa.

Appeals

Appeals

From his days as a newly minted lawyer, John has worked throughout his career to vindicate his clients’ interests in appellate courts. His advocacy in this arena has resulted in positive results for his clients, despite the fact that very few criminal defendants are successful at this stage. A former journalist and book editor, John is adept at identifying and researching issues and crafting winning arguments.
